How Large Can an Email Be?

Avoiding the Spam Filter

OptCulture is able to maintain a high level of deliver-ability by avoiding the spam filter.

Ensure that emails will be successfully delivered by limiting email size to no more than 100kb of HTML (images and/or text). Email domains (msn, aol, gmail, etc.) have varying email size limits that are allowed before “clipping” or reaching the spam filter. For most, that number is 100kb.

What is “Clipping”?

When an email received is too large to display, email providers will "clip" the email. This means that for recipients to view the full content they must click to open the web version of the email. Such a link typically appears as below.

How Will I Know if My Email is too Large?

An attempt to send an email that is over 100kb will display the error below.

Receiving this message means the amount of content in the email, either text or images, needs to be reduced . OptCulture suggests sending a test email before scheduling a campaign in order to be alerted to the size of the email.
